Do I need to file a tax return?

The IRS has a page that can help you determine whether or not you need to file a tax return. Additionally, adults who previously did not have to file a tax return may find that they do now under the Affordable Care Act. Anyone who receives coverage on an exchange must file a tax return witht he IRS. They will have to attach Form 8962 to compute their actual health premium tax credit, list any advance payments made to the insurer, and then reconcile the two figures.

What is mortgage insurance and is it worth it?

 I just refinanced our home and am amazed at all the mail we have received offering pre-approved mortgage insurance. Mortgage insurance is just life insurance marketed differently, and usually at much higher cost than a simple life insurance policy. You are better off getting a policy that covers your overall insurance and estate planning needs. Another similar and even more expensive type of life insurance is credit insurance. Again, this should be taken care of by your own life insurance and disability insurance policies.

Taxpayers need to be very wary of sophisticated phone and email scams designed to either get them to send money to people not affiliated with the IRS or to get information from them that can lead to identity theft. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by phone or email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts.
